The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been rated for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S ahead of its anticipated release later this year.

The new-gen ports, which are being developed externally by Saber Interactive rather than series creator CD Projekt, were classified on Tuesday by European ratings body PEGI.

Their classification could suggest that official news about release timing will follow in the near future, although a CD Projekt spokesperson said the company had nothing new to announce at this time when contacted by VGC today.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are new platforms for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, so the game had to be submitted for age classification on these platforms specifically,” they said. “This is standard procedure and the date mentioned on PEGI’s website is the rating’s issue date. Release date is yet to be announced.”

In March, CD Projekt said it planned to release the new versions of The Witcher 3 in the second half of 2021, although as recently as last month the company said it couldn’t make guarantees about the launch window.

“As with Cyberpunk 2077, our goal is to release that game still in late 2021,” CD Projekt’s SVP of business development Michał Nowakowski told shareholders.

“However, similarly, the development process is ongoing, and we cannot be absolutely dead certain that the release schedule will not change.”

The new-gen edition of The Witcher 3 will be released as a standalone purchase for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5, and as a free update for players who already own the game on PC, Xbox One and PS4.

The acclaimed RPG celebrated its fifth birthday in May 2020 and has sold over 30 million copies.

Speaking in September 2020, CD Projekt president Adam Kiciński said he hoped the new-gen version of Wild Hunt would significantly extend the lifecycle of the game.

“The Witcher 3 is still selling great and we believe that having it updated on par with the most recent games—or the games that will be released—is a great advantage in terms of sales over the next who knows how many years – five? Four? So, in the long term it will be a meaningful addition to our back catalogue.”
