Who does Charles Martinet play in The Super Mario Bros Movie?

It’s a question fans have been asking ever since it was confirmed that Martinet would still have a role in the film, despite Chris Pratt taking over the role of Mario.

It turns out Martinet plays two roles in the movie, and they’re both fun.

We’ll reveal all in this article, but be aware – this means there are spoilers below, and one of them is for a funny joke early on in the film.

The Super Mario Bros Movie – Charles Martinet’s roles

The main role Charles Martinet plays in The Super Mario Bros movie is Mario’s dad.

He can mainly be seen during the dinner table scenes at Mario and Luigi’s house, and while he doesn’t sound like Mario traditionally does, it’s still undoubtedly Martinet doing the voice.

Martinet’s second role is definitely the more entertaining of the two – he plays a character who’s called Giuseppe in the credits.

He appears twice in the film – once at the start and once at the end. His most notable scene is near the start, right after the Mario Bros Plumbing TV commercial airs. Mario and Luigi are standing in the Punch-Out!! Pizzeria, and Giuseppe can be seen playing a fake Donkey Kong game called Jump Man.

When Mario asks Luigi if their fake Italian accents were maybe a bit too much, Giuseppe interrupts – with a perfect Charles Martinet Mario voice – and tells them the accent was perfectly fine.

This is, of course, an inside joke referring to the fact that Martinet was replaced by Chris Pratt for the movie. In this scene, Martinet is given a chance to get his own back by not only doing his Mario voice, but playing a character whose main purpose is to defend the voice.

Giuseppe appears again right at the end of the movie, after Mario and Luigi defeat Bowser in Brooklyn. When everyone’s out on the street celebrating, Giuseppe can be heard saying Martinet’s trademark “wahooo”.
