VGC Patreon update: More videos, more podcasts
Here’s what supporters got this month
In case you missed it, VGC is on Patreon giving you more podcasts, videos, and bonus content from VGC.
Earlier this year, we launched Patreon.com/VideoGamesChronicle.
We want to offer more of what makes VGC great, while at the same time making sure that we’re never pay-walling the content that you’ve come to expect from us.
By supporting VGC, you’re securing the future of fiercely independent game media, and getting a ton of extra content each month.
We’ve launched 2 new podcasts, posted hours of exclusive video content, and more. But what exactly do you get for your support?
More Podcasts
Recording VGC: The Video Game Podcast is the highlight of our week, and the feedback since we launched the show with our partners at Stak has been incredible.
We know how much our readers enjoy it, and how much they want more, so on Patreon, that’s what we’ve offered. Two, brand new monthly shows, covering topics that VGC is the expert in: old games, and off-topic chat.
Chatting Vintage Games, or CVG, is our monthly retro podcast. Each month, host Chris Scullion takes a topic, whether it be a console in the case of September’s episode on the Dreamcast, or a genre, like our planned horror-themed special in October, and reminisces.
Joined by VGC staff and a rotating cast of our expert friends, CVG is a podcast that is built on VGC’s strengths: a huge wealth of knowledge and experience.
CVG is available to Patreon members at the Supporter tier and above, in both video and audio formats. Supporters can also be part of the show by contributing their memories and thoughts on that month’s topic.
Our other show, VGC: Off Topic, is exactly what it sounds like. If you’ve heard the first few minutes of most episodes of VGC: The Video Game Podcast, you’ll know that on occasion, we can stray off the path of games, down the mines of West Ham, Scotland, and energy drinks. CVG is an entire monthly podcast of those conversations.
VGC: Off Topic is available to Patreon members in both video and audio formats at the Insider tier and above.
More Videos
Another part of our Patreon offering is our expanded video output. This includes longer looks at new games (which currently includes some of the last surviving Concord footage on earth), looks at our extensive collections of gaming memorabilia, and even edited skits and IRL videos featuring the VGC crew.
Patreon gives us the opportunity to upload frequent, off-the-cuff videos that give you extended looks at games outside of the traditional announcement, preview, and review cycle.
Not only this, in what we think is a pretty unique offering for the space, we’re bringing you behind the scenes on press trips, and what it’s really like to work in the games industry.
Content on modern games is available to Patreon members at the Supporter tier and above, while our edited videos and looks at older titles are available for the Insider tier and above.
More VGC
Our final offer on Patreon is our simplest: More VGC.
What this means is by supporting us on Patreon, you ensure that VGC can continue to be an independently-owned leader in the games media space. It means that we can provide our daily news, reviews, and opinions that you know us for, completely free.
We never want Patreon’s VGC offering to feel like we’re gatekeeping things that used to be free on the website behind a paywall. This is an additive experience and one we’re very proud of.
We’ve not even mentioned Chris Scullion’s weekly roundup of gaming news, which feels like it could have been plucked out of any classic gaming magazine of the mid-2000s. That’s available to all Patreon members, every week.
But our journey on Patreon doesn’t stop there, we’ve only just started. We want to grow, offer more and hear from our Patreon supporters about what they want from VGC.
In the year VGC turned 5, we want to thank you dearly for all your support of the years, and we hope you come with us as we take the next steps.
It’s no secret that recently it’s been a difficult time for journalism, especially around video games.
As an entirely independent publication, VGC has felt these market pressures more than most, which is why we decided to launch a Patreon earlier this year to build a closer relationship with our readers and create a more sustainable path for the future.
By supporting VGC on Patreon, you can help us continue to do what we do best across breaking news, insightful reviews and thoughtful opinions, while giving us the foundation to create more of the podcasts, videos, and community features you enjoy. And soon, we will offer on-site benefits such as commenting and ad-free browsing, exclusively for Patreon members.
