The new Virtua Fighter 5 is reportedly part of June’s PS Plus update

A new version of Virtua Fighter 5 will reportedly be released next month at no additional cost to PlayStation Plus subscribers.

According to Areajugones – a Spanish site which has reported accurate PS Plus leaks in the past – Virtua Fighter: Ultimate Showdown will be one of the three PS Plus titles planned for June, alongside EA’s Star War: Squadrons and PS5 spy adventure Operation Tango.

Banner and icon art for Virtua Fighter eSports was published on the Japanese network earlier this month with the name Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, which matches a listing published on South Korea’s game ratings board website.

Sega is set to officially reveal its “Virtua Fighter x eSports” project in a Japanese live stream on Thursday, May 27.

Ultimate Showdown would mark the first standalone release for Virtua Fighter 5 on last-gen consoles.

Sega’s fighting series hasn’t seen a mainline instalment since 2010’s Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, which was eventually released for Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2012, and later made available via a mini-game in 2016’s Yakuza 6: The Song of Life for PS4.

The ‘Virtua Fighter X eSports’ project was revealed via a teaser trailer aired during Sega’s Tokyo Game Show live stream last September. At the time, the company did not reveal further details on what the project was.

Sega CEO Haruki Satomi described Virtua Fighter X Esports as “a project commemorating the 60^th year anniversary of [Sega],” starting “first” in Japan, but the latest PS Plus listing suggest that the West is also receiving the title.

In 2019, Virtua Fighter’s creator Yu Suzuki suggested he could be in discussions to return to his former series.

Suzuki recently created Shenmue III with his company YS Net, but remains a consultant with his former employer Sega.
