The latest PS5 system update is now available
Sony says the firmware update improves stability and “messages on some screens”
The latest PlayStation 5 system software update is available for download now.
Version 23.01-07.40.00 will be available the next time users turn on their console.
It’s a fairly minor update, with only two patch notes:
- “We’ve improved system software performance and stability”
- “We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens”
The last firmware update for the PS5 was version 23.01-07.20.00, which was released in April. It too was minor, however.
The console’s last major update was rolled out in early March, having previously launched in beta in early February.
In addition to Discord voice chat, it added the ability to start or request a Share Screen session with a friend directly from their profile.
It also introduced Variable Refresh Rate support for displays that support 1440p resolution.
Other new features included the ability to transfer data between PS5s, an option to upload game captures to the PlayStation App, using voice commands to capture video clips, and the ability to sort and filter games when adding them to a gamelist.

PS5 system updates released later in March fixed an issue with how Game Library content was being displayed and another that was causing Discord voice chat to disconnect.
Sony announced in April that it plans to sell a record number of PlayStation consoles during this fiscal year.
The company intends to ship 25 million PS5 consoles during FY2023 (the 12-month period ending on March 31, 2024).
If achieved, it would beat a 25-year-old console sales record set when the original PlayStation shipped 22.6 million units in FY98.
