That’s according to the latest report from NPD Group, which indicates that the Naughty Dog exclusive is behind only Marvel’s Spider-Man and 2018’s God of War in life-to-date dollar sales for Sony’s first-party titles.
Following its release on June 19, The Last of Us Part 2 sales have broken multiple records for Sony. The sequel cleared four million copies worldwide in three days, making it the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive to date.
The Last of Us Part 2 also recorded the second-biggest launch month ever for a Sony-published game in the US, according to market research firm NPD Group.
Finally, the title broke PlayStation’s digital launch record with 2.8 million copies sold digitally in June, surpassing the 2.2 million digital sales Marvel’s Spider-Man and Final Fantasy VII Remake recorded during their launch months, according to Nielsen’s SuperData.
“We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part 2 and shared their experiences with us over the last week,” creative director Neil Druckmann told the PlayStation Blog, following its launch record in June.
“We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible.”
According to the data, Ghost of Tsushima debuted as 2020’s fifth best-selling game year-to-date and is its developer’s fastest-selling release in history.
