The $180 PlayStation Lego set has been officially announced, and it’s out soon
The long-rumoured PlayStation Lego set was recently spotted in a Lego store
After months of speculation, and the set even appearing in Lego stores in some regions, the Lego PlayStation has been announced during PlayStation State of Play.
The Lego console itself is produced to almost the exact size of the original system andwill cost $179.99 / €159.99 /£139.99 and will consist of 1,911 pieces.
The set will be released on October 1 on PlayStation Direct, followed 3 days later in Lego stores and online. Two dioramas will be included in the set, one representing Gran Turismo and the other representing Ape Escape.
It was previously reported that an Astro Bot gift with purchase will be released alongside the system.
“To bring this set to life, we collaborated closely with LEGO designers to craft a building experience that is inspired by PlayStation’s origins,” said SIE’s Steffi Steffen. “When building the set, players will notice hidden details from PlayStation’s history and references to two iconic games that launched on the original PlayStation console, Ape Escape and Gran Turismo.
“Each diorama features customizable elements – Gran Turismo includes a miniature track complete with scaled-down cars, while the Ape Escape diorama has a nostalgic island scene with a swappable blue or red light on the monkey’s helmet.
“The interactive set has functional mechanisms for the console’s Power and Open buttons, a controller that can plug into the console, and the ability to remove both game dioramas so they can be displayed separately.”
The official Lego site frequently adds GWP sets as part of limited-time offers alongside major set releases. These aren’t sold by Lego as individual standalone products, and can usually only be acquired as part of a promotional deal.
As such, it’s all but certain that the Lego Astro Bot GWP set will only be available by buying the Lego PlayStation set directly from the Lego website, and this will likely only last for a limited time after its release.
GWP sets are frequently resold on sites like eBay, but at a relatively high price. When a Kanto Region Badge Collection was offered as a GWP with Lego’s Pokémon set featuring Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur, scalpers started listing the set on eBay for prices ranging from $175 to $300.
