The creative director of Star Wars Outlaws has said he’s slightly disappointed with the critical reception to the game.

The open-world title currently has scores of 75 (Xbox Series X/S), 76 (PS5) and 77 (PC) on review aggregation site Metacritic.

Speaking to GamesRadar, Ubisoft Massive’s Julian Gerighty suggested he’d like the scores to be a bit higher.

“I’m a little disappointed with the Metacritic; Of course, recognition from press and critics is very important to us, but players are really connecting with what we did,” he said.

There’s a “level of pride, happiness, and sense of accomplishment” amongst the team, and there’s still more to come from the game, he added.

“This will be a game that millions of people are going to play for years and years, and we’re never going to stop improving it,” he said. “Well, that’s a lie, we’ll probably stop improving it, but today my mind is not on stopping improving it.”

VGC’s 3/5 star Star Wars Outlaws review called the game “a pulpy, Uncharted-style adventure that doesn’t quite fulfil its potential”.

“You can play through Star Wars Outlaws and have an enjoyable time, as we did, but you’ll be left yearning for a sequel that takes all its best bits, of which there are plenty, and delivers on them to the fullest,” we wrote.

“For now, it’s a good first step into a wider galaxy, but won’t trouble lists of the best Star Wars adventures ever.”

Ubisoft’s share price has dropped to its lowest level since 2015, following Star Wars Outlaws’ release last week.

According to analysts, the decline has been driven by a combination of a poorer than expected commercial start for Star Wars Outlaws and a sharp fall in interest in Ubisoft’s free-to-play shooter XDefiant.
