Square Enix’s Foamstars is officially going free to play in October
The game underperformed commercially, according to Square Enix
Foamstars is going free to play.
The Square Enix game, which was previously being sold on the PlayStation Store for $30 / £25, will be free to all users from October 4.
The game, which is still exclusive to Sony‘s consoles, was released earlier this year. The game was available to PlayStation Plus members at launch.
A message on Square Enix’s website reads:
“Thank you for your support of Foamstars. Foamstars, currently available on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation4, will change from its current regional pricing to a free-to-play title starting from October 4th 2024 at 1:00AM.
In addition, while previously a subscription to PlayStation®Plus was required to play Foamstars, after the price change, consumers who are not subscribed to PlayStation®Plus may download and play Foamstars for free.
For those who have downloaded Foamstars before this change in price, we are planning to distribute a free “Legacy Gift” that includes these exclusive in-game items:
-12 exclusive color-variant Bubble Beastie skins
-1 exclusive Slide Board design
-1 title: “Legacy”
According to publisher Square Enix, Foamstars underperformed following its release. It, alongside Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 was blamed by the Japanese giant for weaker-than-expected financial results.
According to Bloomberg’s Takashi Mochizuki, Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu told analysts at the time that sales of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Final Fantasy 16 and Foamstars all fell short of its expected revenue and profit.
