Square Enix hopes to develop Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 in about three years

Square Enix has given fans an update on the status of the third and final part of its Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy.

The update arrives via interviews published in the newly released Final Fantasy 7 Remake Ultimania book, excerpts of which have been translated by Final Fantasy enthusiast Audrey.

In it, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth creative director Tetsuya Nomura reportedly said the third game’s main story has already been completed, and that he thinks voice recording could start in the near future.

Nomura said Final Fantasy 7 remake series producer Yoshinori Kitase has raised the possibility of including something new and important in the game too, even though it didn’t feature in the original.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake was released for PS4 in April 2020. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, an upgraded version of the game that included a DLC expansion titled Episode Intermission, arrived for PS5 in June 2021. And Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was released in February 2024.

With about a year spent working on Intergrade, Kitase said Square Enix managed to make Rebirth in about three years, partly thanks to employee retention.

By retaining much of the same team for the third game in the series too, he reportedly hopes to complete the final part of the trilogy in a similar timeframe.

That means Square Enix could be targeting a 2027 release for the game, when the original Final Fantasy 7 will be celebrating its 30th anniversary.

A Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth update released this week fixes a bug that was making it impossible for some players to earn a Platinum Trophy, among other features.
