Resident Evil 7 and the recent remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3 are coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles later this year, Capcom has announced.

In a tweet, the developer revealed that the upgrades will be free for existing owners, however, it didn’t share a release date for the new-gen versions.

“Upgrade patches for all three games will also be released for PC players at no additional cost when the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions launch!” read a follow-up tweet.

According to Capcom, the new-gen console versions of the games will include “visual enhancements”. It did not say if there will be new features beyond this.

Both Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 2 remake were met with extremely positive reviews, with both games being sited as a return to form for the franchise.

However, Resident Evil 3‘s remake wasn’t as popular with critics. This was due in some part to the remakes changes to the original game.

In our Resident Evil 3 review at the time, we said: “Print out a walkthrough for the original Resi 3 and you may as well have printed out a cheesecake recipe for all the good it’ll do you: this is a completely different game.”

Capcom is currently working on a remake of Resident Evil 4, which will reportedly be revealed this year.

According to a  Fanbyte report, corroborating a VGC report from last year, which claims Capcom is planning to adjust the tone of the classic Resi game, instead of developing a shot-for-shot remake of the original title.

VGC reported in 2021 that there were internal disagreements with Capcom about the direction of the project, with the company’s own production team preferring to develop a game that was inspired by the original but incorporates new elements. Resident Evil 2’s Mr X was given as an example.
