PlayStation Stars is initially available via the PlayStation App and will expand to consoles at a later date.
It’s free to join for adult PlayStation Network account holders and doesn’t require a PlayStation Plus membership, although having one offers additional benefits.
“There are two types of rewards – loyalty points and digital collectibles,” Sony explained recently. “Points can be redeemed in a catalog that may include PSN wallet funds, exclusive digital collectibles and select PlayStation Store products.
“As an additional benefit, PlayStation Plus members enrolled in PlayStation Stars automatically earn points for purchases on PlayStation Store.”
At launch, simply by joining, all members receive the Star Gazer Telescope. A number of upcoming digital collectibles were revealed in the trailer above, which first aired during a State of Play presentation last month.
“Digital collectibles represent the things that PlayStation fans enjoy, including cherished devices that tap into Sony’s broader heritage in consumer electronics,” Grace Chen, PlayStation’s vice president of network advertising, loyalty and licensed merchandise, said at the time.
These collectibles will only be available through PlayStation Stars.
“In some instances, collectibles will be provided as a way to commemorate past activities, achievements, or product ownership,” Chen said. “They range in rarity, just like the actual products on which they are based or the effort required to earn them.”
Players will be able to arrange collectibles in a virtual display case within the PlayStation App and show them off to friends within their PSN profile.
