Picross developer Jupiter has announced that its long-awaited Sega crossover is coming next week.
Picross S Mega Drive & Master System (or Picross S Genesis & Master System, as it’ll be known in North America) will be released on Switch on August 5, and will be priced at $9.99 / €9.99 / £8.99.
The game plays like any other traditional Picross game from Jupiter, except all the puzzles are based on sprites from Sega Master System and Mega Drive games.
There are a total of 480 puzzles included, covering 59 different Sega titles including Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Out Run, Phantasy Star, Shinobi, Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage.
The puzzles are split into four different modes. There will be 300 puzzles in standard Picross and Mega Picross modes (the latter offering more complex clues), 150 puzzles in Clip Picross (where players solve smaller grids to complete three large pieces of pixel art), and 30 puzzles in Color Picross (where players have to not only fill in the correct squares but also make sure they’re the right colour).
The Sega Picross crossover was announced in June 2020, but Jupiter had provided no further updates until now.
Jupiter has been developing Picross games for Nintendo systems since Game Boy title Mario’s Picross in 1995. Since then it’s released more than 25 Picross games on the Game Boy, SNES, DS, 3DS and Switch.
Next week’s Sega game won’t be Jupiter’s first Picross crossover title. Previous collaborations have led to Picross versions of Pokémon, Sanrio, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, manga and anime series Kemono Friends and the Japanese novel series Overlord.
