PC files suggest Marvel’s Spider-Man had a multiplayer mode
Game files reference co-op and PvP modes featuring Miles and Peter
Insomniac Games was developing a multiplayer mode for Marvel’s Spider-Man, which would have included Miles Morales and various game modes, according to PC game files.
With the release of the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remaster, Twitter user DniweTamp has discovered inside the game executable references to a multiplayer game mode that are not accessible. VGC has verified the contents of the files, confirming these elements.
Going by limited information that is accessible, the multiplayer mode would allow a second player to take control of Miles Morales along with his unique loadout abilities in various activities. It would also include a PvP mode and a game-type reference as “Free For All” which would have been PvE mode.
The files include callouts to which player has become “the Superior Spider-Man”, as well as “player 1”, “player 2” and red and blue teams.
The Multiplayer mode would seemingly have been separate from the Single Player campaign. According to the game files, it would not be available from the beginning of the game, meaning the player would have to unlock this mode or possibly download it as additional content.
The files could suggest that a Multiplayer mode is being developed for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the sequel that is seemingly set to include both Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
However, after announcing the sequel, Ryan Schneider from Insomniac Games referred to the game as “their most epic single-player adventure yet.”
Marvel’s Spider-Man released for PC last week and, according to Steam data, it reached fewer peak players than God of War‘s PC debut, making it the second most-played PlayStation PC title.
The game reached 66,436 players at the time of writing, just under 10k fewer than God of War, according to SteamDB. Horizon Zero Dawn. which was the first major PlayStation title to make the transition, saw 56,557 players at its peak.
In our review of Marvel’s Spider-Man on PC, we said: “This is an excellent PC port with Steam Deck support that elevates to it to a must-own for anyone with Valve’s portable. While Sony may never make a PlayStation Vita 2, if its support of the Steam Deck continues as more and more PlayStation exclusives migrate to PC, it’ll soon feel like the next-generation Sony handheld many of us have always wanted.”
