New free Quake campaign from MachineGames available now for the 30th Anniversary
Dawn of the Machine is available now
It has been 30 years since the original Quake launched in 1996, and now MachineGames has returned with a brand new episode for the game.
Quake: Dawn of the Machine is a fully-fledged new episode for the original game developed by MachineGames in collaboration with id Software.
The new episode comes with 19 all-new levels filled with secrets, a new soundtrack, and a new Deathmatch map.
The news was announced via Bethesda’s Slayers Club, along with more details on what to expect in Dawn of the Machine.
“As the battle-hardened Ranger, players survive a labyrinthine dimension where time folds back onto itself, creating a unique looping structure where each visit in the present reshapes the future,” the description reads.
“Collect runes to unlock previously sealed paths brimming with new routes, encounters and secrets, plus persistent health and ammunition upgrades throughout add a new layer of progression to Quake’s classic gameplay.”
Dawn of the Machine is available as a free update for modern versions of the original Quake, including Xbox Series, Xbox One, Microsoft Store, Steam, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PS4 versions of the game.
In April 2025, Microsoft was criticized for showing a tech experiment which uses AI to generate Quake 2 in real-time.
In January 2026, a report stated that MachineGames is working on Wolfenstein 3 and a Rainbow Six Siege-style multiplayer game.
July 2026 saw id Software lay off 136 developers as part of a wider restructuring from Microsoft.
