Naughty Dog has shown off the first concept art for its standalone The Last of Us multiplayer game.
It has its own story, a brand-new cast of characters, and more information on the game will be released in 2023.
Geoff Keighley talks with Neil Druckmann about the Last of Us
“What I can tell you is that this game is big,” Druckmann said. “It’s as big as any of our single-player games and in some ways bigger. It’s got a story, the way we’re telling that story is very unique to this game.
“It’s got a brand-new cast of characters, it takes place in another part of the United States. It’s really cool and it’s being headed by Vinit Agarwal, Anthony Newman and Joe Pettinati, all veterans of Uncharted and The Last of Us, and you’re going to see a lot more of this game come next year.”
He added: “It’s something special and we can’t wait to show it to you.”
The Last of Us Part 2 director Druckmann announced in September 2019 that the title wouldn’t include a multiplayer component as originally planned because the studio “wanted to take all of the resources to make this the biggest game we’ve ever done”.
However, in a follow-up statement, Naughty Dog pledged to release a new Last of Us multiplayer offering after its work on the sequel was complete.
“You will eventually experience the fruits of our team’s online ambition, but not as part of The Last of Us Part II,” it said. “When and where it will be realized is still to be determined. But rest assured, we are as big a fan as Factions as the rest of our community and are excited to share more when it’s ready.”
Following a leak earlier on Thursday, Naughty Dog has also officially revealed the long-anticipated remake of the original Last of Us, which is coming to PS5 in September and is in development for PC too.
“Experience the emotional storytelling and unforgettable characters of Joel and Ellie in The Last of Us, winner of over 200 Game of the Year awards and now rebuilt for PlayStation 5,” reads an official product description.
“Enjoy a total overhaul of the original experience, faithfully reproduced but incorporating modernized gameplay, improved controls and expanded accessibility options. Plus, feel immersed with improved effects and enhanced exploration and combat.
“The Last of Us Part I includes the complete The Last of Us single-player story (PS5) and celebrated prequel chapter, Left Behind.”
