Mortal Kombat 1’s future DLC plans in doubt after poor reception to Khaos Reigns, it’s claimed

Future Mortal Kombat 1 DLC is in doubt after the game’s latest expansion Khaos Reigns sold poorly, it’s been claimed.

According to Reddit user _FateUnknown_, a user with a track record of revealing information about forthcoming Mortal Kombat content, a third Kombat pack of DLC characters and a second story expansion were planned for the fighter, but have since been canceled.

This was reportedly due to what they claim were “low sales” of Khaos Reigns, the game’s recent story expansion.

Khaos Reigns was released earlier this year for $49.99/£39.99. The package included new story content and the second Kombat Pack, featuring new characters.

The DLC was received poorly by fans, however. Based on 68 Steam reviews, the package has a “mostly negative” rating, with fans complaining about the lack of content offered in the expansion.

This week saw the release of Ghostface, the 10th DLC character in Mortal Kombat 1, and the fourth to be added as part of Kombat Pack 2.

The first Kombat Pack added Omni-Man from Image Comics, Quan Chi, Peacemaker from The Suicide Squad, Ermac, Homelander from The Boys and Takeda Takahashi as playable fighters.

So far Kombat Pack 2 has added Mortal Kombat veterans Cyrax, Sektor and Noob Saibot, with Ghostface being the pack’s first guest character.

Following Ghostface will be the T-1000 from Terminator 2, and Conan the Barbarian. Neither character’s release date has been confirmed.

VGC’s Mortal Kombat 1 review called the game “an excellent retkon that will appeal to modern and lapsed fans”.

“Mortal Kombat 1 is the best Mortal Kombat game to date,” we wrote. “It looks stunning, has a brilliant Story mode, its new Invasions mode will keep solo players busy and, above all else, it’s an absolute joy to play. Thoroughly essential for die-hards, lapsed fans and newkomers.”
