Modern Warfare 2 launch breaks franchise sales record, Activision claims
The game generated $800 million in three days, according to its publisher
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has enjoyed the most lucrative launch in the history of the long-running franchise.
That’s according to publisher Activision, which claimed on Monday that the game topped $800 million in sales in its first three days of availability.
In doing so, it surpassed the previous five-day franchise sales record, set in 2011 by Modern Warfare 3.

Modern Warfare 2 has topped $1 billion in sales in 10 days, making it the fastest-selling entry in the long-running series, according to Activision.
Activision claimed the game’s blockbuster launch was the highest grossing entertainment opening of the year, topping the combined worldwide box office openings of Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
The game also set new franchise records for the number of unique players and hours played through its first three days for a premium Call of Duty game.
Modern Warfare 2 was released on October 28 and enjoyed the biggest PlayStation Store launch ever for a Call of Duty game, including pre-orders and day one sales, according to Sony.
“Thank you to our talented team that has created magic through extraordinary artistry and technology, and to the global community of players who find joy and connection through Call of Duty,” said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick. “This milestone belongs to them.”
While not officially confirmed, it’s been claimed that Activision doesn’t intend to release a new mainline Call of Duty game in 2023, essentially skipping a year for the first time in two decades.

The company stated in August that Call of Duty will receive “new premium content” in 2023, and it’s been claimed that this will come in the form of a Modern Warfare 2 campaign expansion and a ‘greatest hits’ pack containing multiplayer maps from a variety of classic Call of Duty games.
Modern Warfare 2’s first season of live content will launch on November 16 alongside the free-to-play Warzone 2.0.
