The art director and character designer for the Metal Gear series has revealed that he dreams of one day designing a car.
In an interview in the latest issue of Edge magazine, Yoji Shinkawa was asked if he has any more career goals, given that he’s enjoyed a level of success and recognition that many artists could only dream of.
“One day I would like to design a car,” Shinkawa replied. “A real car.”
“This has been a long-held ambition for me.”
Citing his main influence for this ambition, Shinkawa explained: “Aaron Beck is a concept artist who makes and customises cars that he designed.
“To look at models of cars or planes and think, ‘isn’t that something you ride on?’ and then to build one in real life is such a big-scale project. I admire that.”
This marked the beginning of a long-running professional relationship with Kojima, with Shinkawa serving as art director on every game in the Metal Gear Solid series.
Shinkawa said in March last year that he was working on the next Kojima Productions project and that he believed it wouldn’t be long before it was announced.
“Well yeah, I am doing something, for sure, and I could tell you probably that we can announce it quite soon,” he told AI Hub.
