Here’s Mega Man: Dual Override running on Nintendo Switch 2
From our brief demo, Mega Man’s return is looking promising
VGC recently got the chance to go hands-on with Mega Man: Dual Override.
In the short demo, we completed three short stages from the upcoming platformer and got a look at some of the new mechanics coming to the franchise. From what we’ve played in our short demo, it’s clearly a game that’s well aware of the hardcore audience that it has to retain, while also making some elements slightly more accessible.
Before each stage, the player can choose a specific power-up which can make things easier or more challenging. One may give the player the ability to instantly charge an attack, cutting down multiple seconds typically required to fire off a powerful blast. Another gives the player the ability to call down Mega Man’s dog, Rush, who serves as a trampoline.
This results in a player-dictated difficulty slider that is clearly intended for players to graduate from the easier buffs to the tougher ones. Rush’s ability to act as another platform also allows the player to access secret areas of the stage, or in some cases, skip the vast majority of the platforming challenge present in the level.
Our demo concluded with a battle with Twinkle Girl, one of the new bosses in the game. Her fight was a visual treat, but also full of the pattern recognition and timing-based gameplay that the series is known for. The feeling of replaying the boss over and over, dialing in those early attacks and gambling on the later ones, is present in Mega Man: Dual Override. While the portion of the game we played was all too brief, it’s certainly a positive first look at the Blue Bomber’s return.
Mega Man: Dual Override will be released in 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
