God of War Ragnarök’s release date reveal tops 1m Instagram likes in less than a day

The God of War Ragnarök release date announcement has proved extremely popular with fans on social media.

On Wednesday Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that the God of War Ragnarök release date is November 9, 2022.

At the time of publishing, the announcement was made around 22 hours ago, and in that time it has racked up 154,000 likes on the official PlayStation Twitter account and more than four million views on YouTube.

Perhaps, most impressively, the announcement also generated a million likes on Instagram within around 17 hours, a milestone rarely reached on the PlayStation Instagram account.

By comparison, the Instagram post announcing The Last of Us Part I remake was posted three weeks ago and currently has 317,000 likes.

It’s by no means PlayStation’s most liked Instagram image of all time, however. That accolade goes to the PS5 logo, which was posted in January 2020 and amassed nearly 5 million likes in 48 hours.

An image of PS5’s DualSense controller also amassed more than four million likes on the social media platform in under 24 hours.

God of War Ragnarök was originally scheduled for release in 2021, but last June Santa Monica Studio said it had been delayed to 2022 to help the studio deliver “a top-quality game while maintaining the safety and wellbeing” of its team.

It had been heavily speculated that Sony would announce the game’s release date last week – this ultimately didn’t happen, leading some of the game’s developers to reportedly receive abuse from people online.

This caused creative director Barlog to take to Twitter to make a plea to the gaming community to start treating game developers better.

“They are busting their ass to make some[thing] for you to enjoy,” Barlog said. “Show some fucking respect.”

Later, after retweeting the news that Return to Monkey Island director Ron Gilbert will no longer be posting about the game because of online abuse, Barlog again expressed his wish for the community to behave more respectfully.

Replying to a follower who said they blamed the journalists and insiders who had claimed the God of War Ragnarök release date would be revealed in June, Barlog replied: “Don’t. The answer is not to find someone to blame or focus hate on.

“Maybe just pay it forward and treat the people that make the things we love with some human decency and respect. This is not a battle, we are not at war. We are just trying to make and enjoy things together.”
