Ghost of Tsushima and PS5 topped the US sales chart in May

Ghost of Tsushima took the top spot on the US software sales chart in May, while PS5 was once again the leading console platform.

Sony’s game was last month’s best-selling title based on tracked dollar sales following the release of the PC version, according to research firm Circana, which published its latest US games industry sales report on Monday.

The top-performing brand-new release was Switch exclusive Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door from Nintendo, which doesn’t share digital sales data.

“[Ghost of Tsushima] generated a slightly higher consumer spending total across physical and digital game sales than did physical-only sales of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door,” said Mat Piscatella, executive director, video games at Circana.

Other new releases that made May’s top 20 chart included Homeworld 3 at No.14 and F1 24 at No.18.

On the hardware front, PS5 remained the month’s top-selling console in both unit and dollar sales.

Nintendo Switch once again placed second in unit sales, while Xbox Series X/S ranked second in dollars.

“Through each console’s first 43 months in market, PlayStation 5 unit sales lead those of PlayStation 4 by 8%, while Xbox Series trails Xbox One by 13% and remains slightly behind Xbox 360,” Piscatella said.

Total US consumer spending on game hardware, content and accessories in May fell 6% year-over-year to $3.975 billion. Year to date consumer spending remains up 2% at $22.751 billion.
