Double Dragon Revive revealed: Yuke’s working on 3D revival
The new game in the classic series is coming to consoles and PC next year
Arc System Works has officially unveiled its new Double Dragon game, following yesterday’s first details in Japanese magazine Famitsu.
Double Dragon Revive is being developed by Yuke’s, the studio behind many wrestling games, including the recent AEW title. Revive is planned for release for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and PC in 2025.
“The Double Dragon series has defined the belt-scroll action genre ever since it hit the arcades in 1987,” reads a synopsis. “Now it returns as Double Dragon Revive, thanks to the passionate support of retro game fans over the years!”
According to the announcement, Double Dragon Revive will feature “the same simple and intuitive gameplay” from the classic games, with controls and balance “refined for the modern era”.
“The carefully crafted experience, supervised by staff with experience on Arc System Works fighting game titles, makes it easy for new players to get engrossed right away,” it says.
“The combat requires adaptation and variety, more than a simple button-masher.
“Delve into the strategy by learning enemy patterns and finding the most effective attack timings.
“Pick up weapons scattered throughout the stages and make the most of the area gimmicks to seize the upper hand in battle!”
The original Double Dragon was a hit arcade game which helped establish the beat-em-up genre in the 1980s.
Arc System Works acquired the Double Dragon IP in 2015 and later released Double Dragon 4, an authentic follow-up created with help from developers of the original games, including director Kishimoto Yoshihisa.
The game received mixed-to-poor reviews from critics, however, and currently has a Metacritic score of 49 on PlayStation 4.
