Bloomberg claimed in April that Bend had a Days Gone 2 pitch rejected by Sony following a disappointing critical reception to the original game.
PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst has since said that Bend is working on “a very exciting new IP that they’re very, very passionate about,” adding: “They’re building on the deep open-world systems that they developed with Days Gone.”
Resident Evil Village topped May’s software chart, recording the highest launch month sales of any game in 2021, according to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella. In doing so, it became the second best-selling game of the year so far, behind only Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
Biomutant was the only other new entry to crack the software top 20 in May, charting at No.15.
UPDATE: Piscatella subsequently confirmed that Mass Effect Legendary Edition had been left off the monthly software sales chart first released by the NPD Group. EA‘s game actually charted at No.2 in May, pushing Days Gone down one place to No.21.
ORIGINAL STORY CONTINUES: On the hardware front, Nintendo Switch was May’s best-selling platform in both units and dollars, as it is in 2021 year-to-date.
Nintendo’s system has now been the best-selling console in the US for a record 30 consecutive months based on units sold.
Total consumer spending on video game hardware, content and accessories last month was up three percent year-over-year to $4.5 billion, with year-to-date spending up 17 percent to $24 billion.
