Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 release date and starring characters confirmed
Activision also reveals artwork for Infinity Ward’s game, which releases in October
Activision has announced that the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 release date is October 28, 2022.
The release date was shared as part of a reveal at the Port of Long Beach, Los Angeles. Over the course of 24 hours, a team manoeuvred a cargo ship containing a Modern Warfare 2 wrap.
Alongside the announcement, Activision released the teaser trailer below, revealing artwork for Infinity Ward’s game and some of the starring characters.
UPDATE: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 editions, pre-order bonuses and beta details have seemingly leaked.
ORIGINAL STORY CONTINUES: “Task Force 141 makes its massive return with a global squad of iconic veterans, these Operators include Captain John Price, Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley, John ‘Soap’ MacTavish, Kyle ‘Gaz’ Garrick and introducing Mexican Special Forces Colonel Alejandro Vargas,” reads the blurb accompanying the trailer.
Activision revealed Modern Warfare 2’s title and logo in late April.
A low-quality Modern Warfare 2 gameplay clip seemingly leaked last week ahead of the first official gameplay showing, which is expected in early June.
As first reported by VGC in September 2021, Modern Warfare 2’s campaign will be centred around the drug war against Columbian cartels.
Sources said the single-player story is “a grittier take on Modern Warfare 2019’s campaign”, with more close-quarters combat, tricky decision making, and the classic Call of Duty set-piece moments fans have come to expect.
According to people with knowledge of the developer’s plans, Modern Warfare 2 will release alongside a brand new map for Warzone: the third such all-new arena to be launched for the battle royale spin-off.
As with Verdansk, which is based on Modern Warfare 2019, and Caldera, which launched shortly after last year’s Vanguard, the new MW2 Warzone map will be comprised of various classic points of interest, it’s claimed.
Finally, Infinity Ward’s Warzone map will have a second purpose: to house Modern Warfare 2’s third mode, which is described by sources as a mix of PvP and PvE similar to Battlefield 2042’s Hazard Zone.
Modern Warfare 2 is in development at Infinity Ward alongside the new Call of Duty Warzone.
Warzone 2 details allegedly leaked online last week, including plans to bring the game closer Call of Duty’s first battle royale, Black Ops 4’s Blackout.
