Baldur’s Gate 3 is getting official mod support in September
A closed alpha has kicked off today, with a closed beta to follow in July
Official mod support for Baldur’s Gate 3 will be introduced as part of the game’s next major update in September.
Larian Studios said it plans to fine tune the new feature through two test phases.
Beginning today, a closed alpha will see the studio “working closely with a small team of mod authors from the community” to further develop modding tools.
A closed beta, which anyone will be able to register for but which will be capped at about 1,000 players, will then launch in July. It will allow participants to test the mods created during the alpha stage.
Modding support will be released first on PC. “We expect to roll out the support to the wider community and various platforms shortly after – including for Mac players, as well as PlayStation and Xbox consoles,” Larian said in an FAQ.
In addition to modding tools, the game’s next major update will introduce “improved evil endings to the game for even darker conclusions to your most sinister playthroughs”, plus “a whole bunch of fixes, quality of life improvements, and more”.
Larian, which recently opened its seventh studio, in Warsaw, Poland, is currently working on two new projects based on its own original IPs.
In March, Larian boss Swen Vinke said the studio was moving on from the Dungeons & Dragons universe to try its hand at something else.
