Square Enix is currently developing a Final Fantasy 9 remake, it’s been claimed.
While a Final Fantasy 9 remake has yet to be announced, Giant Bomb reporter Jeff Grubb claimed this week: “I will say I heard very recently, once again, Final Fantasy 9 remake is real, that is real and happening.”
Gematsu subsequently reported that a Final Fantasy 9 remake is currently in development too.
Final Fantasy 9 was originally released in 2000 for the PlayStation. It was directed by Hiroyuki Ito who would later direct Final Fantasy 12.
Earlier this week, a team of professional developers and artists released a 25-minute gameplay demo of Final Fantasy IX: Memoria Project, a proof of concept passion project designed to show what the game could look like with modern graphics.
Square Enix is also currently working on the second entry in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy.
In a Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth update last week, producer Yoshinori Kitase said: “Development is progressing smoothly and according to plan, We are currently working on nailing down a release date for the game.”
When Rebirth was announced in June 2022, Kitase said the game would be “released next winter”, meaning in late 2023 or early 2024.
