2K reveals Mafia: Definitive Edition gameplay in a new 15 minute video

Developer clarifies game is ‘not a shot-for-shot remake’ of the original

15 minutes of Mafia: Definitive Edition gameplay has been published, ahead of a planned reveal later today.

The footage, uploaded by IGN, offers the first significant look at Hanger 13’s remake. Publisher 2K has said it will show a further look at the game in a live stream on Wednesday.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a comprehensive remake of the original Mafia game, according to 2K, which is set to release on September 25 with an updated script, expanded backstories, and additional cutscenes. The remake will be powered by Mafia 3’s game engine and feature new gameplay sequences and features.

However, Hangar 13 president and chief creative officer Haden Blackman told IGN in a new interview that the game would not be a shot-for-shot remake.

“We knew from the outset that the core narrative would hold up well,” he said. “There weren’t giant plot holes that we had to shore up. The mission flow — the number of missions — we knew would hold up. The tone and central themes and setting — the Prohibition era — we knew that all those things were things that would hold up.

“Then, when we started looking at the next layer, that’s where we said we needed to take things up to modern standards. The way in which we tell the story, the quality of the cinematics, the representation of certain characters.”

Mafia: Definitive Edition is set to release initially on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam, followed by the Epic Games Store and Stadia at a later date.
