All FFXIV Dawntrail Yak T’el Aether Current locations

Head to the Yak T’el Aether Currents locations to rediscover how to fly your favourite flying mounts through the skies of this new Final Fantasy XIV zone for the Dawntrail expansion.

You’ll collect most of the Aether Currents in Yak T’el as you work through the story on each side of the region, with side-quests rewarding more Aether Currents becoming available as you wrap the story in each half. As such, you can unlock flying as soon as you’re done with the MSQ in the area, or swap to a second class to reap XP rewards from the quests and map discovery objectives.

Yak T’el Aether Currents quests

You’ll need to complete the following quests to get the remaining Aether Currents in Yak T’el:

  • Aiming High | Side-quest (clear MSQ “Taking a Stand” to unlock)
  • Secrets in the Cinderfield | Side-quest (clear MSQ “Taking A Stand” to unlock)
  • Beasts of the Heartlands | Side-quest (clear MSQ “The Feat of the Brotherhood” to unlock)
  • Lost and Powerless | Side-quest (clear MSQ “The Feat of the Brotherhood” to unlock)
  • Road to the Golden City | MSQ

You won’t have to think too much about when to pick these up. Each set unlocks as you complete the main scenario quest chain that starts in that half of the map.

Do note, however, that there is a particular side-quest involving a lengthy stealth mission objective. Set time aside for that.

What are Aether Currents?

Aether Currents are collectibles you’ll find in each major zone from Heavensward onward. Collect the lot to unlock the ability to fly mounts in that specific zone.

Though most are collected out in the field, side-quests and main story quests reward the rest of the Aether Currents you’ll need to unlock flying in a zone.

It’s largely believed that the aether current system is in place to slow down the potential rapid consumption of expansion content. The main quests guide you along a specific path through a zone, encouraging you to take in the sights and sounds of each new location—aspects you might otherwise skip over due to the conveniences of flight.
