
Tencent
Tencent is a multinational technology conglomerate and the world’s largest gaming company, with investments in Ubisoft, Epic Games, Supercell, Riot Games, and more.
Tencent was founded in 1998 in the Cayman Islands with funding provided by venture capitalists. The company initially provided internet and messaging services, and its name roughly translates to “galloping fast information”.
In 2003, Tencent Games was founded to focus on online games, with operations in Singapore and Amsterdam. Its first published game, QQTang, was followed by QQFantasy, QQSanguo, QQHuaxia, and many others.
In 2011, kickstarted its investment strategy into foreign game companies, starting with League of Legends studio Riot Games, obtaining a 92% stake for $230 million.
Today, Tencent owns many game companies, including Funcom, Riot Games, Turtle Rock Studios, and Fatshark. It also has investments in companies such as Ubisoft, Paradox Interactive, From Software, and Epic Games.
Tencent also publishes video games under five internal studio groups: TiMi Studio Group, LightSpeed Studios, Aurora Studio Group, Morefun Studio, and Next Studio.
