Sony Interactive Entertainment (formerly Sony Computer Entertainment) is a multinational video game company owned by Sony.
The company was founded in 1993 to spearhead Sony’s venture into video games via its PlayStation brand. Since the launch of the original PlayStation console in 1994, SIE has expanded into several territories across the world and is also a developer and publisher of video games.
The original PlayStation console was released in Japan in 1994 and in the United States and Europe in 1995. The PlayStation 2 was released in 2000, firstly in Japan in March, followed by the US in October.
The PlayStation Network Platform, eventually known as PlayStation Network (PSN), was launched in 2006 to include free multiplayer support. In 2012, PSN accounts were changed into SEN accounts to be used with all Sony Entertainment Network services.
SIE formed PlayStation Studios in 2020, which serves as an umbrella organization for its first-party game development studios as well as for branding on games developed by the studios acquired by Sony.
Studios associated with SIE include Team Asobi, Santa Monica Studios, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Guerilla Games, Polyphony Digital, Housemarque, and Insomniac Games.
